Scientists warn that a strengthening Super El Niño and a positive Indian Ocean Dipole could reshape weather, agriculture and water risks across South Asia.

A rapidly strengthening Super El Niño is drawing global attention as climate scientists warn that the phenomenon could reshape weather patterns across much of the world during the coming months. The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) says El Niño conditions are expected to strengthen further through September to November 2026, while a developing positive Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD) could amplify climate impacts across the Indian Ocean region.

For Bangladesh and South Asia, the warning is particularly significant. Scientists say the combination of these two climate systems could influence rainfall, heat, agriculture, water resources and disaster preparedness. They also caution that seasonal forecasts describe changing probabilities, not guaranteed outcomes.

Why scientists are closely watching 2026

El Niño is a naturally occurring climate pattern that develops when sea surface temperatures become unusually warm across the central and eastern Pacific Ocean. The warming changes atmospheric circulation, affecting weather systems thousands of kilometres away.

According to the WMO and major climate monitoring agencies, the current event has strengthened unusually quickly and is expected to remain strong through the coming months. Scientists say exceptionally warm global ocean temperatures may increase the intensity of its impacts.

The WMO's latest seasonal outlook also points to a positive Indian Ocean Dipole developing during the same period. Together, these climate systems can influence monsoon behaviour, temperatures and rainfall across South Asia, East Africa and Australia.

Scientists stress that El Niño is a natural climate cycle, but its impacts can become more severe in a warming world.

What this could mean for Bangladesh

Bangladesh is one of the countries where climate conditions are closely linked to rainfall and seasonal temperature changes. Meteorologists say El Niño does not produce identical weather every time, but it changes the likelihood of certain patterns.

Possible impacts include:

  • Higher-than-normal temperatures and longer heatwaves.

  • Uneven rainfall during parts of the post-monsoon season.

  • Greater pressure on irrigation and freshwater resources.

  • Increased stress on agriculture during sensitive growing periods.

The positive Indian Ocean Dipole adds another layer of uncertainty. While El Niño often reduces rainfall across parts of South Asia, a positive IOD can alter regional rainfall distribution and influence weather systems over the Indian Ocean.

For Bangladesh, that means some areas could experience below-normal rainfall while others may still receive heavy precipitation depending on regional atmospheric conditions.

Agriculture, water and disaster preparedness

Agriculture remains one of Bangladesh's most climate-sensitive sectors. Changes in rainfall timing and higher temperatures can affect rice cultivation, vegetable production and water availability for irrigation.

Water managers are also monitoring river flows, reservoirs and groundwater because shifts in rainfall patterns could increase pressure on drinking water supplies in vulnerable regions.

Disaster management authorities are expected to strengthen monitoring for heatwaves, drought conditions and periods of intense rainfall. Early warning systems become increasingly important when seasonal climate signals indicate elevated risks.

Scientists emphasise that local weather over Bangladesh will still depend on the Bay of Bengal, regional atmospheric circulation and short-term weather systems. Seasonal forecasts cannot predict the exact timing or location of individual storms, floods or droughts.

Forecasts are not the same as observed impacts

Climate agencies underline an important distinction between forecasts and observed events. The current outlook indicates an increased probability of warmer conditions and altered rainfall patterns during the coming months, but it does not mean every extreme weather event will be caused by El Niño.

Researchers continue to monitor Pacific Ocean temperatures, the Indian Ocean Dipole and atmospheric circulation as new data become available. These observations help governments update forecasts and preparedness plans throughout the season.

For Bangladesh and the wider South Asian region, the coming months will require close monitoring of heat, rainfall and water conditions. Scientists say preparedness based on reliable forecasts is essential for protecting agriculture, water security and vulnerable communities from climate-related risks.
