A decade returns

DHAKA, September 9, 2026 — The 1980s are making an unexpected comeback on Bangladeshi social media, as people use artificial intelligence to imagine themselves in a decade they remember—or never experienced.

The trend transforms ordinary photographs into retro portraits featuring period clothing, hairstyles, studio backdrops and the soft, grainy appearance of old film. What began as an international social media phenomenon has found an audience in Bangladesh, where the appeal appears to be less about recreating history than revisiting a feeling of a different time.

Participants are sharing images that place them in an imagined 1980s, often with the fashion, lighting and visual details associated with the era. The results can look like family photographs, studio portraits or old magazine pictures, depending on the instructions given to the AI tool.

For some, the trend is a way to revisit memories. For others, it offers a chance to imagine a past they never lived through.

A search for a simpler past

The renewed interest in the 1980s reflects a broader fascination with life before smartphones and constant digital communication. The decade evokes memories of face-to-face conversations, handwritten letters, music, family gatherings and a slower-looking everyday life.

That does not mean the past was necessarily easier. Rather, nostalgia allows people to select the parts of an earlier period that feel comforting or familiar. In an age of rapid technological change, the visual language of the 1980s can offer a temporary escape from the present.

“If I were in 1980, I think I would look like this.”

The caption, shared with a retro image, captures the playful nature of the trend. It is not a claim that the photograph is historical. Instead, it invites viewers to imagine an alternative version of themselves.

Younger users are also drawn to the style, even if they never experienced the decade. Through AI, they can explore its clothing, hairstyles and atmosphere without having lived through it. Social media then turns those private experiments into a shared cultural experience.

How the AI trend works

Unlike a traditional vintage filter, generative AI can recreate a photograph as if it had been taken decades ago. Users can upload a clear photograph and ask an AI image-generation tool to reimagine them in the 1980s.

A prompt such as the following can be used:

“Create a realistic photograph of me as I might have looked in the 1980s. Keep my facial features and identity recognizable, but change my hairstyle, clothing, accessories and surroundings to match the decade. Use authentic 1980s fashion, warm studio lighting, subtle film grain and the look of an old printed photograph.”

The image can then be refined with additional instructions, such as changing the outfit, adding a vintage hairstyle or placing the subject in a period-appropriate setting. Users can save the final image and share it on social media.

The trend is largely playful and creative, but it also shows how AI is changing the way people interact with the past. Instead of simply looking at old photographs, users can now imagine themselves inside an earlier era.

For Bangladesh, the 1980s revival is another example of how global digital trends can take on local meaning. The images may be fictional, but the feelings behind them—curiosity, familiarity and a desire for something slower—are widely recognisable.

As the trend continues, the 1980s are becoming more than a fashion reference. They are a visual language through which people can explore memory, identity and the appeal of a world before everything became digital.
