Monsoon Fury Sweeps Bangladesh as Floodwaters Rise Across Multiple Districts

Persistent monsoon rain and rising rivers are increasing flood, flash-flood and landslide risks across vulnerable parts of Bangladesh.

DHAKA, August 24, 2026 — Bangladesh is facing renewed pressure from heavy monsoon rainfall, with authorities warning of flood, flash-flood and landslide risks in several parts of the country. Government agencies are maintaining preparedness and response measures, particularly in southeastern and northeastern districts, as rainfall and river levels remain a concern.

The latest conditions follow a severe spell of monsoon weather that has already caused major flooding and landslides this season. In July, flooding across seven districts affected more than one million people, while 267,918 households were reported stranded at the height of the disaster.

Heavy Rainfall and Rising River Levels

The Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre (FFWC), under the Bangladesh Water Development Board, has repeatedly warned that heavy to very heavy rainfall can rapidly increase river levels and trigger short-term flooding in vulnerable areas. Earlier warnings identified risks across parts of northern, northeastern and southeastern Bangladesh.

The situation is particularly sensitive around major river systems and areas adjoining the hill districts. Heavy rainfall in upstream catchments can increase water flowing into Bangladesh, while intense local rainfall can overwhelm drainage systems and cause rapid waterlogging in low-lying communities.

The FFWC's official monitoring system continues to track river conditions and flood risks nationwide as weather conditions develop.

Southeastern Districts Remain Vulnerable

Southeastern Bangladesh remains among the areas particularly exposed to monsoon-related flooding and landslides. Chattogram, the Chattogram Hill Tracts and surrounding areas face additional risks because of their hilly terrain, intense rainfall and vulnerability to flash floods and landslides.

Government authorities said on August 23 that preparedness and response measures were underway in southeastern and northeastern districts to address possible flash floods, landslides and hill collapses.

Earlier forecasts also warned that intensified rainfall could rapidly raise river levels and inundate low-lying areas, particularly in Chattogram and other southeastern districts.

Agriculture and Transport Under Pressure

Flooding is posing a significant threat to agriculture as standing crops and farmland can remain submerged for extended periods. Farmers in low-lying areas face potential crop losses, while livestock and household assets may also be threatened when water rises quickly.

Transport is another major concern. Flooded roads and damaged infrastructure can isolate communities and make it harder to transport food, drinking water, medicines and other essential supplies.

During the major July floods, road damage, power disruptions and broken communications complicated relief operations. Communities that remain vulnerable after the earlier flooding could face additional difficulties if heavy rainfall continues.

Humanitarian Impact and Official Response

The current weather conditions follow a particularly severe monsoon season. A humanitarian situation report estimated that about 1.11 million people across 10 districts were affected by the July 2026 flash floods, including more than 12,900 people with disabilities.

The July disaster also caused significant loss of life. Reuters reported that at least 44 people had died by July 11, with the death toll subsequently rising as flooding and landslides continued.

Government agencies and local administrations are continuing preparedness and emergency-response activities in vulnerable districts. Authorities are monitoring rainfall, river levels and flood-prone areas while preparing for possible flash floods, landslides and hill collapses.

The Bangladesh Meteorological Department provides official weather warnings, rainfall observations and forecasts, while the FFWC monitors river conditions and issues flood-related warnings.

Residents in low-lying and landslide-prone areas are being urged to remain alert, follow official warnings and avoid unnecessary travel through flooded or landslide-prone areas.

Outlook

Bangladesh's flood risk remains closely linked to both local rainfall and water arriving from upstream catchments. Forecasts issued in recent weeks have repeatedly highlighted the possibility of rapidly rising rivers and short-term flooding when heavy rainfall persists.

For now, the priority remains protecting lives, maintaining access to essential services and ensuring that vulnerable communities can evacuate quickly if floodwaters or landslide risks increase.

This report is based on information available as of August 24, 2026. River and weather conditions can change rapidly, making continued monitoring of official BMD and FFWC updates important.
