China Lands Zhuque-3 Booster, Narrowing Reusable-Rocket Gap With SpaceX
LandSpace has successfully recovered Zhuque-3’s first stage after an orbital launch, marking China’s first land recovery of an orbital-class booster.

Historic Booster Recovery
China has taken a major step toward reusable orbital launch technology after private space company LandSpace successfully recovered the first stage of its Zhuque-3 rocket following an orbital launch.
The achievement, reported on August 19, marks the first successful land recovery of an orbital-class rocket booster in China. The Zhuque-3 lifted off from the Dongfeng Commercial Space Innovation Pilot Zone in northwest China and successfully delivered its payload into orbit before its first stage returned for a controlled landing.
The booster used deployable landing legs to make the touchdown. The achievement puts China alongside the United States in demonstrating orbital-class booster recovery and gives its growing commercial space sector a significant new capability.
The mission was LandSpace’s second attempt to recover the Zhuque-3 first stage. The company’s previous attempt in December 2025 failed to complete the controlled landing, although the rocket successfully reached orbit.
The successful landing marks a major step toward making reusable orbital rockets a practical part of China’s commercial space industry.
The Zhuque-3 is a 66.1-metre methane-fueled stainless-steel rocket designed with reusability as a central feature. Its first stage is intended to return after launch so that the expensive hardware can potentially be used again.
From Sea Recovery to Land Landing
The latest achievement follows another important Chinese milestone in July, when a state-developed Long March-10B first stage was recovered at sea.
That booster used a different approach. Instead of landing on legs, the first stage made a controlled descent and was captured by a net aboard an offshore recovery vessel. The July mission made China only the second country to successfully recover an orbital-class rocket stage, after the United States.
The Zhuque-3 achievement demonstrates a second recovery method: a controlled return to land using deployable landing legs. It is also significant because LandSpace is a private Chinese company, rather than a state-owned launch organisation.
Together, the two missions show that China is pursuing reusable launch technology through more than one technical route. Chinese state-backed organisations and private companies are developing and testing reusable systems as the country seeks to expand its commercial launch capacity.
The effort follows several earlier failures and experimental programmes. LandSpace itself failed to complete the Zhuque-3’s first controlled landing attempt in December 2025. The successful second attempt represents a major improvement in the programme.
SpaceX Remains the Benchmark
The achievement has sharpened comparisons between China and SpaceX, which pioneered the operational use of reusable orbital boosters. SpaceX first successfully landed a Falcon 9 first stage in December 2015 and has since made booster recovery a routine part of its launch operations.
LandSpace’s achievement therefore narrows the technological gap, but it does not mean China has matched SpaceX’s level of operational experience.
SpaceX has already demonstrated repeated booster reuse on a large scale, with some Falcon 9 first stages flying more than 20 missions. China is only now moving from successful recovery demonstrations toward the next challenge: repeatedly refurbishing and flying recovered boosters.
LandSpace has said it aims for the Zhuque-3 booster to be reused up to 20 times. The company also plans to reuse the recovered booster within six months, a step that could provide a more meaningful test of whether the technology can support frequent commercial launches.
Commercial and Strategic Stakes
Reusable rockets are important because they can reduce launch costs by allowing expensive hardware to fly multiple times. Lower costs could support more frequent satellite launches and strengthen the competitiveness of China's expanding commercial space sector.
The achievement also comes as China develops large satellite programmes and seeks greater capacity for future launches. The country's reusable-rocket effort includes both state-backed programmes and private companies such as LandSpace.
For LandSpace, the successful recovery could also strengthen its commercial prospects as the company seeks to raise 7.5 billion yuan, or about $1.11 billion, through an initial public offering on Shanghai’s STAR Market.
China's progress is therefore part of a wider international competition over reusable launch technology. The United States remains the leader in operational reuse, but China's latest success demonstrates that the gap is narrowing.
The decisive test will now be whether the recovered Zhuque-3 stage can be refurbished and successfully flown again. A single successful landing establishes a capability; repeated launches and recoveries would establish a sustainable reusable-rocket business.
